Victoria Phonographers Union
People collect all sorts of things: artwork, model cars, rare coins. Members of the Victoria Phonographers Union (VPU) collect sounds. Through field recordings (the recording of natural sounds outside of a recording studio), each member of the collective has a unique library of audio files gathered during travels, nature and city walks, or from everyday activities. Performing on laptops, the VPU juxtaposes familiar, novel, and foreign sounds in a listening environment that detaches context from the sound source. Their intent is to offer an investigation into how we individually perceive, analyze, and connect with sound and the thoughts and sensations that these sounds evoke in their raw, unprocessed state.
Formed in 2010, the Victoria Phonographers Union grew out of a workshop and performance with the Seattle Phonographers Union. The VPU is available for performances (live or for radio) and workshops on various topics including recording techniques, field recording, sound ecology, and improvisation.
Past and recent members of the VPU include: Michael Bennyworth, Hunter Boucher, Caleb Cobell, Christine Comrie, Kristy Farkas, Jessica Karuhanga, Eugene Lee and Christopher Reiche
